This vibrant watercolor painting by acclaimed American artist Jean Uhl Spicer (b. 1935) is signed and dated 1995. It features a richly layered composition of red berries and green foliage, set against an expressive background of violet, indigo, and teal tones. Characterized by Spicer’s hallmark use of luminous color and confident brushwork, the piece reflects her deep affinity for natural subjects rendered with artistic sophistication.

Spicer is a nationally recognized watercolorist affiliated with the American Watercolor Society, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, and others. She was twice awarded the prestigious Edgar Whitney Award by AWS, including in 1995—the same year this piece was completed. Artist Biography – Jean Uhl Spicer (American, b. 1935)

Jean Uhl Spicer is an award-winning American watercolorist celebrated for her vibrant, nature-inspired compositions. Born in Philadelphia in 1935, she studied Illustration at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art (now the University of the Arts), graduating in 1957. Spicer went on to build a distinguished career as both an artist and educator, becoming known for her expressive interpretations of botanical subjects and her mastery of watercolor technique.

Spicer’s work is defined by luminous color palettes, fluid brushwork, and a keen sensitivity to natural forms. She is especially recognized for her floral studies and garden scenes, where precise observation meets emotional expression. Throughout her career, she has exhibited nationally and has been honored by prestigious organizations, including the American Watercolor Society, where she received the Edgar Whitney Award in both 1995 and 2001.

A member of multiple watercolor societies—including the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, Baltimore Watercolor Society, and the National Watercolor Society—Spicer has also contributed to the field as an instructor, workshop leader, and author. Her 2004 book Bright & Beautiful Flowers in Watercolor shares her techniques and creative philosophy with aspiring artists.

Jean Uhl Spicer’s paintings continue to be held in private collections and are admired for their timeless beauty, technical excellence, and evocative connection to the natural world.
