Louis XVI Style Marble-Top Cabinet – Mahogany Inlay, Porcelain Liner
An elegant Louis XVI-style French cabinet, likely dating from the early 20th century, blending neoclassical design with vestiges of 19th-century utility. Topped with a beveled 1-inch thick removable marble slab, the cabinet is constructed in finely inlaid mahogany with chevron and floral marquetry. Turned legs with brass-capped feet and gilt bronze corner mounts emphasize its classical lineage.
This multifunctional piece includes a dovetail drawer above a central cabinet door, which opens to a shelved interior lined with porcelain—an indicator of its original purpose as a washstand, from a time before indoor plumbing was standard. Four vertical side compartments (16" x 1.75") were designed for storing trays or shallow basins, later adapted for magazines or serviceware as domestic needs evolved.
With its mix of decorative craftsmanship and historical function, this cabinet offers a glimpse into a transitional era of furniture—ideal for collectors, decorators, or as a conversation-starting accent in refined interiors.
Condition:
In good condition overall, with light surface wear consistent with age. The marble top shows a chip on the rear left underside, not visible from above. Brass mounts, interior porcelain insert, and compartments are all intact and well-fitted.
