Description

Chinese Canton Carved Ivory Puzzle Ball on Figural Stand — 19th Century

A finely carved Chinese Canton ivory puzzle ball on stand, likely dating to the late 19th century. The ball features multiple concentric spheres, each freely rotating within the next, intricately pierced with geometric star motifs and surrounded by high-relief floral carvings. The pedestal is elaborately turned and features reticulated segments above a finely detailed figural mountain scene, resting on a leaf-edged circular base. The underside is marked with the number “23,” likely a workshop or collection reference.

Puzzle balls, often referred to as “devil’s work balls,” were masterfully created in Canton (Guangzhou) during the Qing dynasty for export to the West, admired for their complexity and delicate craftsmanship. Each nested sphere was meticulously carved from a single piece of ivory, requiring immense skill and specialized tools.

An exquisite example of Chinese export artistry, blending sculptural beauty with technical mastery—ideal for collectors of Asian antiques or fine decorative arts.
