Vintage Chinese Hongmu Carved Tea Table – Battle Scene, Glass Top, 32" Dia
A vintage Chinese tea or cocktail table, finely hand-carved from solid hongmu hardwood. The circular top features a high-relief battle scene with mounted warriors in dramatic mid-combat, set against a backdrop of flowering trees and pagoda-style architecture. The composition and iconography suggest inspiration from the 14th-century literary classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a foundational Chinese epic known for its legendary generals and heroic duels. The apron continues the narrative in pierced and layered relief, depicting additional figures and landscape scenes in exceptional detail.
Resting on claw-style feet, the table includes a custom-fit, 1/8-inch-thick removable glass insert (not pictured) to protect the intricate carvings. From a private estate collection, this piece reflects the storytelling tradition and high craftsmanship associated with early 20th-century Chinese decorative arts.
