Leo Salazar Carved Santo Figure — Signed, 21" Hand-Carved Cedar
This hand-carved cedar Santo figure by renowned Taos santero Leo Salazar (1933–1991) is a compelling example of mid-20th century New Mexican religious folk art. Carved from a single solid block of wood, the figure likely represents a Madonna and Child, rendered in Salazar’s signature abstract style with strong, simplified lines and a quiet, meditative presence. The child is held front and center, integrated into the sweeping form of the robe, a hallmark of Salazar’s minimal yet expressive technique.
Salazar began carving in the mid-1960s, influenced by legendary santero Patrociño Barela. His work gained wide recognition, and today his carvings reside in permanent collections including the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of International Folk Art, and even the Vatican. This piece is signed LEO SALAZAR on the underside and reflects his mature period, likely late 1980s. At 21 inches tall and weighing just over 6 pounds, it commands attention both spiritually and sculpturally—a rare and desirable piece for collectors of santos, religious folk art, or Southwestern heritage.
Condition:
In fair condition overall. The figure’s nose is absent, and a visible natural vertical split runs down the front and back. Additional surface wear is present, consistent with age and the nature of the material. The sculpture remains solid and displays well.
