1890s Austrian Jugendstil Cast Brass Tobacco Jar with Cherub Reliefs
This 1890s Austrian Jugendstil cast brass tobacco jar features exquisite craftsmanship, adorned with raised cherub reliefs in a celebratory pose, framed by wreath motifs. The vessel stands on an elegantly tiered pedestal base with decorative engravings, and its removable domed lid is topped with an ornate finial. The symmetrical handles, designed with circular finials and pointed details, add to its striking silhouette.
Crafted in the late 19th century, this piece showcases the flowing, organic forms typical of the Jugendstil movement, a precursor to Art Nouveau, making it a remarkable collector’s item or a sophisticated display piece. While unmarked, its style and construction are consistent with Austrian bronze tobacco jars of the period.
Condition:
Good overall, with visible signs of use and finish wear consistent with age. One handle is slightly bent, but the piece remains structurally sound. We have left the patina intact for the buyer to choose whether to polish it.
