J. Bonsall Expressive Still Life – Watercolor (Framed, 25” x 31”)
A beautifully expressive watercolor on paper by James Belton Bonsall (1926–1999), dated 1947. This early piece presents a striking still life of aged books resting amid fallen leaves, evoking themes of knowledge, impermanence, and nostalgia. The books, appearing weathered yet enduring, stand against a background of swirling earthy browns, muted reds, and soft blues, creating a dreamlike, almost introspective atmosphere. The composition’s gestural brushwork and fluid washes of color highlight Bonsall’s early experimentation with expressionism and abstraction.
Though unsigned, this piece is framed and matted behind glass and features a brass plaque indicating its restoration by G.K. Sims, adding to its provenance and historical value.
