S.S. North West Reed & Barton Silver Soldered Sugar & Creamer Set
This antique sugar bowl and creamer set, crafted by Reed & Barton, hails from the luxurious S.S. North West, a premier passenger steamer of the Northern Steamship Company. Launched in 1894, the S.S. North West was celebrated for its opulence and innovation, offering passengers unparalleled comfort on the Great Lakes routes between Buffalo and Duluth.
Historical Context:
-
Northern Steamship Company & S.S. North West: Established by railroad magnate James J. Hill, the Northern Steamship Company sought to connect freight shipments between Buffalo and Duluth. Venturing into passenger services, they introduced the S.S. North West in 1894, followed by its sister ship, the North Land, in 1895. These vessels were renowned for their luxury, featuring interiors adorned with mahogany and brass in the Louis XV Rococo style. The S.S. North West could accommodate between 800 and 1,000 passengers per trip, with a dedicated crew of 147, and boasted amenities like an unlimited supply of fresh water, hot and cold water under pressure, and flush toilets—features that were advanced for its time.
