Description

Russell Mott Studio Pottery Bowl & Vase

This exquisite studio pottery set features a handcrafted bowl and vase by Russell Mott, a distinguished ceramic artist from Las Cruces, New Mexico. Both pieces are signed RM04 and RM05.

Artist Background: Russell Mott embarked on his pottery journey later in life, dedicating himself to the craft with remarkable passion. He had the privilege of apprenticing under renowned potters such as Claude Smith III, Steve Hemingway, Dave Porter, and Alex Williams. Mott's commitment to his art is evident in his rigorous routine, often starting his workday between 3 to 4 AM and dedicating 10 to 14 hours daily in the studio.

Together with his family, Mott operated MVS Studios, a gallery and custom frame shop in downtown Las Cruces. The studio showcased contemporary art, including Mott's ceramics, and served as a creative hub for local artists.

Key Features:

  • Handcrafted by Russell Mott: Celebrated potter from Las Cruces, NM.
  • Dramatic Drip Glaze: High-gloss black base with flowing blue, gray, and tan accents.
  • Signed & Numbered: Marked RM04 and RM05 on the base.
  • Distinctive Forms: Rounded vase with a narrow opening and a sturdy bowl, both showcasing organic, fluid glazing patterns.

Dimensions:

  • Bowl: 3.25” Height × 4.75” Diameter
  • Vase: 5.75” Height × 6.5” Diameter
  • (Soup can included in photos for scale.)

Condition: Good condition overall. The bowl is smooth, while the vase exhibits a rough glaze texture along the rim, a characteristic of Mott’s unique glazing process.
