Hopi-Tewa Pottery Jar by Joy Navasie "Frog Woman" – Traditional Motifs
This exceptional Hopi-Tewa pottery jar is crafted by Joy Navasie (1919–2012), also known as the second "Frog Woman" and Yellow Flower. Born on Hopi Pueblo’s First Mesa, Navasie began her pottery journey at the age of 17, learning from her mother, Paqua Naha, the original Frog Woman. Known for her mastery of the craft, Navasie developed a distinctive style that remains instantly recognizable among collectors and enthusiasts.
This beautifully formed jar features her signature white slip, over which she applied intricate dark brown and rust-colored designs. The hand-painted motifs reflect traditional Hopi symbolism, incorporating elements of birds, water, and sky that symbolize life, renewal, and harmony with nature. The flowing, abstract geometric patterns highlight her exceptional craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
A hallmark frog symbol, with characteristic webbed feet, is inscribed on the base—an authentic signature of Navasie's work, distinguishing her pieces from her mother’s earlier designs.
