Description

Antique Hessian Soldier Andirons – Cast Iron, Hand-Painted, 19th Century

A pair of antique cast iron Hessian soldier andirons, crafted in the late 19th to early 20th century. These hand-painted figures depict marching Hessian soldiers, dressed in tricorn hats, red coats with gold trim, blue trousers, and yellow gaiters adorned with black button details. Originally designed to support logs in a fireplace, these andirons add a striking historical touch to any hearth or collection.

Condition:

These andirons are in good antique condition, displaying signs of use typical for their age. The original paint has experienced some loss and wear, contributing to their authentic patina. There is surface corrosion present, particularly on the rear iron supports, but they remain structurally sound and functional.

History & Origin:

Hessian soldier andirons were popular in 19th-century America, inspired by the Hessian mercenaries who fought alongside the British during the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783). These soldiers, originally from the German state of Hesse-Kassel, were well-known for their disciplined military presence. Cast iron andirons in their likeness became sought-after fireplace accessories, blending both functionality and historical symbolism.

This pair was likely produced in America, where cast iron foundries flourished in the late 1800s, creating decorative yet practical home goods. Many similar pieces are found in historic homes and museum collections, including those at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Style:

These andirons embody the traditional folk-art style of early American cast ironwork, with bold, hand-painted details that emphasize their character and charm. Their marching stance and expressive faces add to their decorative appeal, making them a unique addition to colonial-style homes, historical interiors, or collections of Revolutionary War memorabilia.

Size & Weight:

  • Each andiron measures: 19.5" H x 9.5" W x 10" D
  • Approximate total weight: 30 lbs
  • Soup can included for scale in photos (not for sale).
