Description

Maitland-Smith Coromandel-Style Decorative Box with Pineapple Finial

This Maitland-Smith decorative box is a striking example of Coromandel-style craftsmanship, blending intricate artistry and functional design. Its design reflects a centuries-old lacquer technique originating in China during the Ming Dynasty, renowned for its labor-intensive and highly skilled process. Layers of clay and lacquer are meticulously applied, dried, and then carved by hand to reveal intricate patterns. Gold leaf is then skillfully applied to highlight the carved designs, creating a luminous effect that captures the eye.

The rich, mottled brown and black lacquered finish, accented with carved gold details, showcases a dedication to traditional craftsmanship. The domed lid is crowned with a finely cast brass pineapple finial, symbolizing hospitality and elegance, while the ornate brass feet elevate the piece both literally and figuratively. The black lacquer interior adds a sleek contrast, making it not only visually stunning but also practical for storing keepsakes, jewelry, or other treasures.

Condition: Good condition with minor signs of use, including a small chip on the middle front trim. No significant damage, and the decorative gilt and lacquered finish remain vibrant.
