Arden Hosetosavit 1974 Hand-Carved Wooden Eagle Vessel
Arden Hosetosavit 1974 Hand-Carved Wooden Eagle Vessel
This is a rare hand-carved wooden eagle bowl by Arden Hosetosavit (1945–2002), a renowned Mescalero Apache and Comanche artist. Signed “ARDEN H.” and dated 1974, this piece showcases Hosetosavit’s intricate craftsmanship, with a design that blends functional artistry and symbolic storytelling. The eagle, a powerful symbol in Native American culture, represents strength, wisdom, and spiritual guidance, while the crescent moon and engraved lettering on the underside add depth to its cultural significance.
Carved from a single solid piece of wood, the bowl features detailed wings framing the hollowed center. The piece retains traces of its original blue-gray paint, now softened into a warm patina, enhancing its rustic charm and folk-art aesthetic.
Arden Hosetosavit, a graduate of the Institute of American Indian Art in 1965, created works that celebrated his Mescalero Apache and Comanche heritage. Known for working exclusively by hand without power tools, his carvings often depicted wildlife, family, and cultural traditions. The Mescalero Apache people, renowned for their deep connection to the land and rich ceremonial traditions, have inspired Hosetosavit’s work. This bowl reflects the tribe’s reverence for the eagle as a sacred figure.
