1887 Oak & Silver Tantalus, Sunderland Athletics Trophy
This antique oak Tantalus, awarded during the "Sunderland Amateur Athletics Sports" on August 1st, 1887, is a remarkable blend of historical significance and decorative appeal. The oak frame features intricate pierced side panels, silver corner reinforcements, and a functional locking mechanism with the original key. A brass plaque commemorates the event, reading: "1 Mile Walking Race Won by John Wilson," making this piece a unique sporting trophy and a fascinating historical artifact.
The Tantalus houses three fine glass decanters with geometric patterns and spherical stoppers. Each decanter measures 8 1/2" x 3" x 3". Although one decanter has been damaged and repaired, the set presents beautifully and retains its charm. The hallmark "B&O" with a shield and the number "3166" suggests the involvement of a reputable maker, though further research may yield more details about its provenance.
This piece is tied to the history of the Sunderland Amateur Athletics Sports, which took place at the Ashbrooke Sports Ground in Sunderland, England. Established in 1887, Ashbrooke was a prominent venue for athletics and other sports, hosting events that attracted competitors and audiences nationwide.
