Description

Antique FRAIM Brass Padlock with Key and Chain

An antique FRAIM brass padlock, with its original steel chain and marked key, likely used in railroad applications during the early 20th century. Manufactured by the E.T. Fraim Lock Company of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, this lock reflects the rugged design and reliability demanded by industrial and railway operators. Both the lock and key are marked "FRAIM," with the key featuring the iconic keystone emblem, symbolizing Pennsylvania’s industrial heritage.

The lock’s solid brass construction and shield-shaped design are paired with a sturdy steel chain, which was a practical feature to prevent the padlock from being misplaced during use. Locks of this type were commonly employed to secure boxcars, compartments, and equipment in railroad operations, offering durability and resistance to harsh environments. The mechanism is fully functional, and the shackle fits tightly, ensuring dependable security.

Condition: Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. The brass body exhibits a natural patina and minor surface wear, while the steel chain shows some oxidation, typical for its age. The functional mechanism operates smoothly, and the shackle remains tight.

Dimensions:

  • Padlock: 4 x 2.5 inches (10.2 x 6.4 cm); 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) thick.
  • Chain: 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) long.
