Antique Mexican Retablo of San Isidro Labrador
This antique Mexican folk art retablo features a hand-painted depiction of San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers and rural communities. The saint is shown seated on a cow or bull, holding vegetation, likely a cornstalk, symbolizing his connection to agriculture and the land. Crafted from hand-painted wood and plaster with a scalloped top and decorative red border, this piece reflects traditional 19th- or early 20th-century Mexican religious artistry. It is wall-mountable and bears evidence of its age and devotional use, with conservation efforts visible on the reverse.
Condition:
Fair antique condition with age-appropriate wear. The piece shows finish wear and paint loss throughout, with chips to the plaster and visible splits in the wood. Conservation repairs are evident on the rear, adding to its historical authenticity.
