Description

18th Century Spanish Colonial Hand-Carved Crucifix with Gilded Starburst and Lacquered Base

A magnificent example of 18th-century Spanish Colonial religious art, this hand-carved crucifix captures the devotional fervor and artistic elegance of the era. The intricately carved wooden corpus of Christ displays remarkable craftsmanship, with expressive features and a patina that speaks to its age. Inscriptions on the reverse, including "C.T." and "A.V." or "M," may point to its artisan or workshop, adding a layer of historical intrigue.

The cross is adorned with a gilded starburst motif, radiating behind Christ in classic Baroque style, though several sections of the starburst are absent due to age. Gilded finials at the ends of the cross emphasize its decorative and ceremonial function. The lacquered ironwood base, with its multi-tiered construction, provides a sturdy foundation and showcases the piece's durability and aesthetic appeal. Designed to separate into two pieces, this crucifix may have been used in processions, a common practice in Spanish Colonial religious traditions.

This artifact is not only a powerful symbol of faith but also a representation of the fusion between European Christian iconography and the craftsmanship of Spanish Colonial artisans. It is a rare and significant addition to any collection of religious or historical artifacts.

Condition

Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. The corpus features a rich patina, and evidence of prior conservation work is visible in stabilized areas. One nail is absent from Christ’s left hand, and several sections of the gilded starburst are missing. The lacquered ironwood base remains stable, with minor chips and wear consistent with its age and use. These details highlight the authenticity and historical significance of the piece.

Spanish Colonial crucifixes of this type were central to both private devotion and public worship, often used in processions or displayed prominently in churches. This piece is an extraordinary representation of that legacy, making it a centerpiece for collectors of religious or colonial-era art.
