Late 1940s Lionel Train Set with 1655 Steam Locomotive

This vintage Lionel O-Gauge train set, produced during the late 1940s and early 1950s, is beautifully displayed in a custom oak and plexiglass case, with components easily removable for closer inspection. The set includes:

  • Lionel No. 1655 Steam Locomotive: A 2-4-2 wheel arrangement with a die-cast boiler, silver rubber-stamped cab number, wire handrails, ornamental bell and whistle, and an operating headlight.
  • Lionel Lines No. 6654W Whistle Tender: Sheet-metal construction featuring "Lionel Lines" lettering, complete with a whistle mechanism (untested).
  • Lionel No. 6452 Pennsylvania Gondola Freight Car: Black gondola car with "Pennsylvania" markings, designed to carry barrels (barrels are absent).
  • Lionel No. 6656 Cattle Stock Car: Yellow plastic stock car, maker-marked underneath "The Lionel Corporation," produced between 1949–1953.
  • Lionel No. 6257 SP Caboose: Red caboose with the "SP" logo, produced between 1953–1955.
  • Lionel No. 6452 2-Dome Sunoco Tank Car: Silver tank car with Sunoco branding, marked underneath "6452."

This set is arranged on a 54-inch train track within an oak display case measuring 6 1/4" x 60" x 3 5/8".

Condition:
The set is in good vintage condition, with signs of use and age-appropriate wear:

  • Scratches and scuffs to the finish.
  • Plexiglass of the display case is scratched.
  • Barrels are absent from the gondola car.
  • Locomotive is untested.

Provenance/History:
Lionel Corporation, a premier name in model railroading, produced the No. 1655 steam locomotive and its No. 6654W whistle tender during the late 1940s. This set highlights Lionel’s quality, featuring postwar-era designs that capture the spirit of mid-century Americana.
