Description

1787 Connecticut Copper – Auctori Conn. Colonial Coin

This 1787 Connecticut Copper is a striking example of U.S. colonial coinage, minted by the state of Connecticut as part of its efforts to produce its own currency during the Articles of Confederation era. The obverse features a laureate bust facing left, inscribed "AUCTORI CONNEC," symbolizing the state's sovereignty. The reverse displays a seated figure of Liberty, holding an olive branch and a staff, with the Latin inscription "INDE: ET LIB" (Independence and Liberty), a testament to the ideals of the American Revolution.

Condition:
Graded VG (Very Good), this coin retains significant design elements, including the distinct bust and Liberty figure, despite moderate wear. The surface shows an even brown patina with minimal signs of corrosion, enhancing its collector appeal.

Provenance/History:
The Connecticut Copper series was minted between 1785 and 1788 under the authority of the Connecticut General Assembly, making it one of the earliest attempts at state coinage in the United States. These coins were widely circulated and filled a critical need for small denominations in commerce, especially as foreign coinage became less available after the Revolutionary War.

Specifications:

  • Year: 1787
  • Mint Location: Various private mints in Connecticut
  • Material: Copper
  • Diameter: Approximately 28 mm
  • Weight: Varies, approximately 8–12 grams
  • Obverse Design: Laureate bust facing left, inscription "AUCTORI CONNEC"
