Description

1863 Civil War Token – Indian Head Design

Obverse:

  • Features the iconic Indian Head design, resembling the official U.S. Indian Head penny.
  • This design was popular during the Civil War token era and symbolizes unity and liberty.

Reverse:

  • Displays the denomination "One Cent" encircled by a laurel wreath, similar to the reverse of official coinage from the same period.
  • The date 1863 is prominently displayed below the denomination.

Historical Context

This token was privately minted during the coinage shortage of the Civil War (1861-1864). The Indian Head design mimicked the U.S. Mint’s Indian Head cent, making it more acceptable for everyday transactions.

Condition

The token shows signs of wear consistent with circulation but retains much of its original detail, especially on the Indian Head obverse and the laurel wreath reverse. The copper patina adds a touch of authenticity, reflecting its historical significance.

Special Notes

  • Significance: These tokens served as a practical replacement for official currency during the Civil War, highlighting the ingenuity of the American people in times of crisis.
  • Collectible Value: This token is a fantastic addition to Civil War or numismatic collections, offering both historical and aesthetic appeal.
