  • Mint Mark: S (San Francisco)
  • Designer: George T. Morgan
  • Composition: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
  • Diameter: 38.1 mm
  • Weight: 26.73 grams

Description:
The obverse features the iconic portrait of Lady Liberty adorned with a Phrygian cap and agricultural motifs, symbolizing freedom and unity. Surrounding the design are the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. The reverse showcases a powerful eagle with outstretched wings, clutching an olive branch and arrows, framed by the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the denomination “ONE DOLLAR.”

Condition:
This example is graded as Fine (F) based on its evident details and noticeable wear. The coin retains its historical appeal despite some circulation wear, evident on Lady Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s breast feathers.

Historical Significance:
The 1879-S Morgan Dollar holds an important place in numismatic history as part of the enduring Morgan Dollar series, first minted in 1878. Coins from the San Francisco Mint are particularly prized for their excellent strike quality. As a tangible piece of the post-Civil War economic recovery, the Morgan Dollar series is a cornerstone of U.S. coinage collections.
