Hallicrafters S-240 General Coverage Receiver
The Hallicrafters S-240 is a five-band general coverage receiver with AM, FM, and shortwave capabilities, produced between 1967 and 1971. Made in Japan, this solid-state model is a blend of quality engineering and classic design, featuring 11 transistors and 6 diodes. It is well-suited for ham operators and shortwave listeners, covering AM frequencies from 530 KHz to 1620 KHz, FM from 88 MHz to 108 MHz, and shortwave bands from 1.8 MHz to 30 MHz, which include many ham bands. The receiver’s features include a telescoping antenna, an external antenna connection, and a selectable on/off BFO (beat frequency oscillator) for tuning into ham bands.
The S-240’s design is sleek and timeless, with a walnut-grained vinyl-covered metal case and a die-cast chrome front panel. This model is often compared to desktop Trans-Oceanic radios in size and style, measuring 5 3/4 inches high, 14 inches wide, and 7 inches deep. Its compact size and vintage aesthetic make it an ideal display piece for desktops, bookshelves, or ham radio setups.
Features:
- Bands and Coverage: Five-band general coverage receiver with AM, FM, and shortwave, including ham bands.
- Transistor Count: Solid-state design with 11 transistors and 6 diodes, providing reliable performance.
- Controls: The receiver includes a BFO switch, FM-AFC switch, audio tone control, a main tuning knob, and a fine-tuning knob. The signal meter aids in precise tuning.
- Antenna Options: Equipped with a built-in telescoping antenna and an external antenna connection, it works best with an external 10-foot wire antenna. Caution is advised for antennas longer than 12 feet, as they can overload the BFO, resulting in audio distortion.
- Power Supply: Operates on 120V AC.
Condition:
This vintage Hallicrafters S-240 receiver is in good, tested condition. It powers on and produces clear audio, functioning well across its various broadcast and shortwave bands. The radio has been assessed for quality and performs reliably, with controls, tuning, and audio adjustments operating smoothly. The cosmetic condition is also good, with only minor signs of wear, typical for a piece of equipment from the late 1960s, adding to its authentic vintage appeal.
Dimensions:
5 3/4" (H) x 14" (W) x 7" (D)
Weight: Approximately 10.5 lbs
Additional Information:
As an entry-level model, the S-240 is straightforward to operate and provides a satisfying experience for hobbyists. It’s an ideal addition for vintage radio collectors, SWLers (shortwave listeners), and ham radio enthusiasts who appreciate the nostalgia of early solid-state radios. This receiver is sure to add character to any collection, ham shack, or vintage-inspired decor.
