About the Artist:
James Belton Bonsall (1926–1999) was an American artist whose life journey is as captivating as his art. Born in the rural, marshy landscapes of Grand Chenier, Louisiana, Bonsall was nurtured in a family that cherished creativity. His mother and sister, both educators and amateur artists, were his first influences, and this early encouragement set him on a lifelong path of artistic expression.
Drafted into the U.S. Army at 17, Bonsall served courageously in three European campaigns during WWII, an experience that broadened his perspective and may have fueled his subsequent artistic explorations. Following his service, Bonsall studied fine arts at Louisiana State University, where he began honing his distinctive voice.
His post-war life was a tapestry of artistic ventures across the United States. He initially worked as a newspaper reporter in California and dabbled in Hollywood, painting sets for theater, television, and film, even appearing in a few minor roles. In 1950s New Orleans, Bonsall’s artistic prowess blossomed. Settling in the vibrant French Quarter, he embraced the bohemian lifestyle, immersed himself in local culture, and created art that reflects the city’s passion and rhythm. His body of work includes over 500 pieces spanning still lifes, abstract works, and moody Louisiana landscapes.
Bonsall’s art reveals his fascination with the world around him, each piece expressing a moment or mood that speaks to a broader story. From his nudes and portraits to abstract compositions that play with light and shadow, his work offers something for every collector.
