About the Artist: Daniel Coriz

Daniel Coriz, a skilled jeweler from the Santo Domingo Pueblo (Kewa), was born in 1964 into a lineage rich with tradition. As the son of Valentino and Nestoria Coriz, and grandson of Lupe Pena, Daniel learned the art of jewelry-making from his family, grounding him in techniques and values passed down for generations. Inspired by his heritage, Daniel creates "treasure necklaces" featuring intricate inlay work with turquoise, lapis, spiny oyster, and coral, meticulously hand-cut and polished. His craftsmanship blends traditional materials with an eye for vibrant detail, bringing the spirit of New Mexico to each piece.

Daniel’s artistic journey began alongside his responsibilities to his community. Initially pursuing a career in electronics and later nursing, he consistently returned to jewelry-making, which allowed him to support his family and honor his culture. His work has earned acclaim, including 1st Place at the Gallup Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonials, a feature in New Mexico Magazine, and a place at the Smithsonian Institute.

Beyond jewelry, Daniel has served his community as Mayor and Lieutenant Governor of Kewa, dedicating himself to improving life for future generations. Each piece he creates is a testament to his legacy—a blend of artistry, family heritage, and a deep commitment to bringing joy and inspiration to others.
