Hubley Cast Iron Fin-Tail Piston Racer No. 1040 — Green Streamliner, c.1930s
Step back into the golden age of American toys with this original Hubley cast iron “piston racer,” stamped No. 1040 and built for speed in both spirit and style. Crafted in Lancaster, Pennsylvania during the 1930s–1940s, this aerodynamic fin-tail racer captures the fascination of an era obsessed with motion, machinery, and the promise of the future.
Finished in its original green paint with gold fins and a black-cast driver, the car features Hubley’s ingenious moving piston hood — twelve red “flames” that rise and fall as the wheels turn, simulating a roaring race engine. This clever mechanical detail made Hubley’s racers some of the most imaginative and collectible cast iron toys of the Depression era, admired as much for their sculptural form as their playful engineering.
Condition:
Fair condition. Shows honest age and play wear throughout, including paint loss, oxidation, and patina consistent with nearly a century of handling. Front two wheels are missing, as well as the rear tailpiece. Remaining surfaces retain good color and the red piston detailing is well-preserved. Please refer to all photos for a clear sense of condition and completeness.
