Description

Sue Nichols 'Rural Reflections'

This evocative oil painting by New Mexico artist Sue Nichols captures a tranquil ranch scene, embodying the heart and soul of the rural Southwest. With a deep personal connection to the land, Nichols' work draws inspiration from her life on an orchard ranch in La Luz, New Mexico, where she resides as part of a fifth-generation farming family. In Rural Reflections, Nichols depicts a serene moment between a standing horse and a resting dog, bathed in the soft glow of the New Mexico sky. The scene feels both nostalgic and timeless, reflecting Nichols' dedication to preserving the disappearing way of life in the region.

About the Artist: Sue Nichols
As a trained artist from New Mexico State University, Nichols' mastery of oil painting brings a sense of realism, while her intention is to leave space for the viewer to form their own emotional connection with the work. Her brushstrokes, rich with texture, pay homage to the animals and the land that surround her in daily life. Nichols' goal is to celebrate and document the culture and history of New Mexico, from the animals that populate the land to the traditions that still live on in rural pockets of the state.

Nichols, whose work has been featured in numerous galleries across New Mexico, draws inspiration from her life on the family ranch, where she and her husband manage one of the state’s largest cherry and apple orchards. The influence of this rural life is clear in her work, which lovingly portrays the landscapes and creatures she knows so well.
