Antique Japanese Hibachi with Copper Lined Basin and Storage Drawers
This antique Japanese hibachi is a beautiful example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and history. The hibachi was a widely used heating device in Japan, designed to hold burning charcoal within a heatproof container. Historically, hibachis were used by the samurai classes and aristocrats for heating and occasionally for cooking or preparing tea. Over time, they became more common in small Japanese homes, especially during colder months. This piece, inherited by our client, features a visually striking burled wood finish. It has five small storage drawers with brass handles.
The removable wooden lid may not be original to the piece but fits the overall aesthetic and function. To further enhance its decorative potential, a custom glass top could be fitted over the charcoal basin, creating a space to display decorative items.
Key Features:
- Traditional Japanese hibachi for heating or tea preparation.
- Beautiful burled wood finish, adding an element of elegance to the piece.
- Copper-lined charcoal basin with a removable lid.
- Five small felt-lined storage drawers with brass handles.
Condition:
Good vintage condition commensurate with age. There are two cracks in the wood near one of the handles, and trim is missing from both side handles. The bottom right drawer is difficult to open and close, and there is some warping between the drawers on the right side. The lid may not be original to the piece, but it fits the design.
