Description

19th Century Burmese Gilt Wood Buddhist Monk in Prayer

Seated serenely with hands clasped in anjali mudra (gesture of prayer), this exquisite figure hails from 19th century Burma, embodying the rich cultural artistry of the Mandalay period. The monk is meticulously carved from wood and adorned with gold leaf, which, despite showing signs of age and oxidation, enhances its spiritual radiance and historical value. The base's red lacquer, though weathered, carries remnants of traditional Burmese motifs, adding depth and authenticity to this devotional sculpture.

Features:

  • Material: Wood with gold leaf application and red lacquer
  • Age: Circa mid-19th century
  • Origin: Mandalay, Burma
  • Posture: Kneeling in prayer with hands in anjali mudra

Condition: Good, with noticeable finish wear as shown in the photos. The statue exhibits considerable wear consistent with its age, including flaking of the gold leaf, cracks, and lacquer loss on the base, which underscore its antiquity and revered use.

Dimensions:

  • Height: 6.25 inches
  • Width: 2.5 inches
  • Depth: 3 inches
  • Soup can included for scale comparison in photos.
