Late 19th Century English Art Nouveau Oak Pipe Cabinet with Pressed Steel Panels and Bone Handles
This late 19th-century Art Nouveau pipe cabinet is a great example of English craftsmanship and elegant design from the period. Made from solid oak, the cabinet embodies the organic and flowing lines characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. The front of the cabinet features two intricately pressed steel panels, each adorned with a stylized floral motif, reflecting the artistic influences of the time. These panels are not only decorative but also serve to protect the contents within.
The cabinet is thoughtfully designed with a hinged top that opens to reveal a spacious compartment, ideal for storing tobacco or other smoking accessories. The interior is well-organized, with two dovetail drawers for smaller items and specifically designed compartments to hold pipes securely. The bone or ivory handles on the drawers add a touch of refinement, further enhancing the cabinet's luxurious appeal.
This piece is maker-marked with 'XVI,' on the bottom. It also includes the original key, allowing the cabinet to be locked, preserving the security of its contents.
The cabinet remains in good antique condition, with signs of use that are consistent with its age. One screw for the lock mechanism is absent. The cabinet has been left in its original, unrestored condition, allowing the natural patina and character of the oak and steel to shine through.
Condition: Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. One screw is missing from the lock mechanism, but the cabinet remains fully functional. The piece is in its original, unrestored state, showcasing its authentic character.
