Shakespeare “Huffman Saddle” Hand Rest No.1616 with Original Box, Pat. 1909
Step back to the golden age of American angling with this ingenious Shakespeare “Huffman Saddle” Hand Rest Attachment, No.1616, patented August 3, 1909. Designed by Harmon G. Huffman and manufactured by the Shakespeare Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan, this clever device promised to give weary fishermen a break—literally. The nickel-plated brass clamp attaches to a casting reel, forming a smooth “saddle” that supports the palm and steadying finger, easing fatigue during long days on the water.
Stamped clearly “SHAKESPEARE’S HUFFMAN SADDLE – HONOR BUILT – KALAMAZOO, MICH – PAT. AUG. 3. 09”, it proudly bears the firm’s famous motto: “Honor Built, Honor Sold.” Complete with its vivid original red box featuring an early lithograph of the attachment, this example captures the innovative spirit of early 20th-century fishing technology—a transitional moment between handmade tackle and the industrial age of sport angling.
Condition:
Good overall condition with age-appropriate wear. Light oxidation and faint surface rust to the spring wire, but the mechanism remains sound. The original illustrated box retains its bright red color and readable text, showing moderate scuffing and corner wear consistent with age. Presents beautifully for display.
Dimensions:
1.5 × 3 × 3 inches
