About the Artist:
Robert H. Evans was a dedicated educator and a passionate artist whose creativity and love for storytelling left a lasting impact on many. After earning a degree in education with a minor in theater arts from Eastern New Mexico University in 1964, Evans spent over three decades teaching in junior high and elementary schools throughout New Mexico and Southern Colorado, with his final two decades in Bloomfield. His students fondly remember his dramatic storytelling and unconventional teaching style, which made learning an engaging and memorable experience.
Evans' artistic journey began in earnest in the summer of 1970 when he participated in a workshop with renowned New Mexico artist Peter Hurd. This experience fueled his passion for painting, particularly on slabbed rocks, where he skillfully incorporated the natural colors, grains, and features of the rock into his rural landscape scenes. His unique artwork often depicted ghost towns and old ranches, with his favorite subject being a two-story outhouse perched on a cliff’s edge. After retiring from teaching, Evans moved to Las Cruces to be closer to family, where he continued to share his love of art and education. He conducted clinics in schools and sold his distinctive rock art at local markets and shows, leaving a lasting legacy in the Las Cruces community and beyond.
