Meet “Brownie” — the jolly, round fellow who rolled his way from early 1900s tobacco shops into 1970s nostalgia! This cheerful roly poly tin was made in 1979 by Bristol Ware / Chein Industries, faithfully reviving the classic 1912 “Brownie” figural tobacco tins once used to promote Duke’s Mixture and other brands.
Formed from two lithographed tin halves, this portly gentleman—with his mustache, pipe, and gold watch chain—captures the playful humor that made early advertising tins so collectible. The bright caricature graphics are pure Americana, blending Edwardian charm with 1970s retro flair. Marked on the base, confirming its Bristol Ware reproduction heritage.
Condition
Good overall with visible surface scratches and light wear from handling. Colors remain vivid and lively, and the tin structure is sound. Displays wonderfully with authentic vintage character.

Background
The original “Brownie” tins were patented in 1912 by the Tin Decorating Company of Baltimore and used to advertise tobacco blends under the Duke’s and Mayo’s brands. Nearly seven decades later, Chein Industries, famed for its lithographed toys and lunchboxes, revived these designs under its Bristol Ware label—turning once-rare relics into collectible icons once again.
