Carved Wooden Fante Akuaba Dolls
Two unpainted fertility carvings from Ghana. The Fante are an Akan people in the central and western regions of Ghana, and Akan women traditionally carried carved wooden dolls to encourage fertility and safe childbirth. Most Akuaba dolls have round disk-like heads, but the rectangular head form and lack of arms implies these were carved by the Fante. Interesting forms with detailed hand carving front and back.
