Mid-Century Carved Bust of Woman
Carved from monkey pod wood, made in Hawaii or the Philippines in the 1950s -1960s. These hand-carved stylized busts of women were popular during mid-century America’s love affair with tropical design. The musical and movie versions of South Pacific coincided with post-war America’s interest in resuming vacation travel; tiki-themed bars and restaurants opened across the country. Monkeypod wooden trays and bowls were popular souvenirs. This particular sculpture is nicely carved. The simple black display base is a later addition to the sculpture.
Condition:
Good, A few spots of minor wear to the finish on the back.
