Harwood Steiger MCM Silkscreened Fabric
For about three decades, starting in the 50’s, Harwood and Sophie Steiger designed and created a wide range of silkscreened textiles celebrating their love of the Sonoran desert and the southwest. They became famous for the printed fabrics they created at their Tubac AZ studio, south of Tucson. Customers used the Steiger fabric to make tea towels, tablecloths, decorative wall panels, and more. The website for the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation has a nice write-up on the artist couple. This vintage piece of Harwood Steiger fabric has a brown design silk screened on a soft gold background. The content is unmarked, but the owner believes it to be a lightweight linen. It features roadrunners, ocotillo, saguaro and prickly pear cactus, and the Harwood Steiger signature. A piece of southwestern design history, waiting for the right application in someone’s New Mexico home.
