Description
Gullah Sweetgrass Woven Items
- Gullah Sweetgrass Tray Basket for Glassware
A round tray basket with two handles and woven rings designed to stabilize glasses. The central portion could be used to hold a small snack bowl. About Gullah baskets: The Gullah are an African American ethnic group primarily living in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, within the coastal plain and the Sea Islands. Their tradition of creating the distinctive Gullah basketry dates back to the 1700s and is rooted in West African culture. Women in the Gullah community have preserved this art form for over eight generations, often selling their work at local markets at cities like Charleston. The baskets are made with locally harvested sweetgrass, pine needles, bulrush, and palmetto.
- Set of Six Vintage Pine Needle Trivets
A vintage set of handmade pine needle and raffia trivets in graduating sizes. These are sturdy enough to be functional as either coasters or trivets, but they’re also pretty hanging on the wall. Each has a small center of teneriffe lacework weaving done with raffia.
- Vintage Pine Needle Tray with Star
An older round handcrafted pine needle basket tray, featuring a 4” wide teneriffe raffia-weaving in the center. Displays beautifully on the wall.
