About the Artist:
John Fulton, born on May 25, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American bullfighter and painter who made a significant mark in both the bullfighting and art worlds. Fulton's journey into bullfighting began in 1953 when he killed his first calf in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. His bullfighting career further developed in Spain, where he became one of only two Americans to receive the "alternativa," a ceremony marking a novice's rise to the rank of matador, in Madrid—the heart of the bullfighting world.
Fulton settled in Seville, Spain, and was deeply integrated into the cultural fabric there, participating in the famous La Maestranza bullring. His dual career also included painting, where he was notably known for using bull's blood as a medium, bringing a unique and visceral dimension to his artworks that reflected his experiences in the ring.
John Fulton passed away on February 8, 1998, in Seville, Spain, due to complications following a heart attack. His legacy continues to be celebrated for his unique contributions to both the arts and bullfighting, with his works being a subject of interest for both art collectors and enthusiasts of bullfighting history.
