Taiyo Polizei VW Beetle & Japan Police Dept No.1 Tin Cars — 1960s–70s
Step back into the golden age of Japanese tin toys with this dynamic duo of steel-bodied, battery-operated police cars — each a miniature time capsule of 1960s–1970s craftsmanship and imagination.
The green and white “Polizei” Volkswagen Beetle, attributed to Taiyo of Japan, captures the iconic curves of the classic VW Bug, complete with blue plastic windows, a working-style siren dome, and the unmistakable German police insignia. Beneath the chassis, Taiyo’s trademark red power switch and copper battery rail confirm its pedigree — a hallmark of Japan’s postwar toy export boom.
Partnering it on patrol is the bold “Police Dept / Highway Patrol No.1” coupe, bearing the distinctive 6017 license plate and a gleaming red beacon. This car, produced by an unknown Japanese maker (possibly Taiyo or Ichiko), reflects the sleek, futuristic lines that made Japan’s tin cars the envy of collectors worldwide. Together, they embody the mechanical ingenuity and playful optimism that defined mid-century Japanese design.
