Harold V. Vore “Sheriff Dept.” Cast Aluminum Campaign Toy Car, c.1938–1941
A fascinating slice of American campaign history, this cast aluminum “Sheriff Dept.” toy car blends small-town politics with early 20th-century toy-making ingenuity. The streamlined sedan, painted in white with black rubber wheels and a tiny red roof beacon, carries its age with charm. On the doors, stenciled “SHERIFF DEPT.” labels mark its official duty, while the real story rides on top — a paper label reading:
“Compliments of Harold V. Vore, Republican Candidate for Sheriff.”
Harold Vore was a 1930s Stephenson County, Illinois politician, and it’s believed this miniature cruiser was produced locally — possibly by the legendary Arcade Manufacturing Company of Freeport, just miles from Vore’s own campaign grounds. Arcade was famous for cast-metal toys and known to make limited promotional pieces, making this crossover collectible especially intriguing. Pieces like this weren’t sold in stores; they were likely handed out at rallies or fairs — tangible tokens of goodwill and good politics.
Condition:
Good condition overall with honest wear from age and use. The paint appears original, showing scattered flaking and oxidation, particularly around the fenders. Labels remain partially legible, with attractive vintage toning. Wheels roll smoothly; structure remains solid with no cracks or repairs.
Dimensions:
2 3/4" H × 3" W × 8 1/4" L
Weight: 9.4 oz
Collector’s Note:
Political advertising on pre-war toys is exceedingly rare — especially examples tied to known candidates.
