Arcade Cast Iron “COAL” Truck & Tools, Freeport IL, c.1930
A charming survivor from America’s industrial toy age, this cast iron “COAL” truck was produced by Arcade Manufacturing Co. of Freeport, Illinois, one of the giants of early 20th-century toy making. Arcade’s castings were famous for their realism and ruggedness—miniature machines for children who wanted to play like grown-ups.
This 10-inch example features the firm’s detailed cab and driver, embossed wheels, and a bright silver-toned dump bed boldly marked “COAL.” Three miniature metal tools—a shovel, pick, and tamping rod—accompany the truck, recalling the gritty work of coal delivery that kept America’s furnaces stoked through the 1920s and ’30s.
Condition:
Good overall; surface oxidation, wear to original paint, later coal bed with repair as noted. Tools show light surface rust consistent with age.
Dimensions:
4" H × 10" L × 3" W
Weight: 2 lb 15 oz
