Description

Arcade Cast-Iron Toy Tank No. 400 — Marked “ARCADE 400 U.S.A.”, c.1920s

A true survivor from the golden age of American cast-iron toys, this Arcade Manufacturing Co. No. 400 Tank (circa 1920s–1930s) is a wonderfully heavy, industrial-age miniature of early armored warfare. Made in Freeport, Illinois, Arcade’s cast-iron vehicles were built with the same pride as full-sized machines — and this tank is no exception.

Finished in its original green paint, this 8-inch model features an angular, riveted hull, open lattice sides, and a working hinged turret hatch—the same style seen in Arcade’s post–World War I line of military toys. Beneath the paint, honest wear and a touch of surface oxidation reveal nearly a century of play and display, giving the piece that irresistible “found in Grandpa’s attic” authenticity collectors love.

Arcade tanks like this were sold through early Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs, often with rubber treads (now absent, as nearly all are) and, on deluxe models, a spring-loaded ball shooter beneath the hatch. The underside bears the correct factory markings: “ARCADE / 400 / 3 / U.S.A.”, confirming genuine manufacture.

Condition:
Good overall condition with expected age wear and surface oxidation throughout. Paint appears original, showing loss and patina consistent with age and use. Turret hinge and axles are intact; rubber treads no longer present (typical for this model). No cracks or repairs observed. Comes as shown.
