Arcade Cast Iron Fordson Tractor No. 284 — c.1930, with Driver
A wonderful survivor from the golden age of American toy making — this Arcade Manufacturing Co. cast iron Fordson tractor, model No. 284, captures the spirit of rural America in the 1920s and ’30s. Finished in its original green body with red spoked wheels, the piece features a seated driver in a brimmed hat and the bold, muscular engine detailing that defined Arcade’s craftsmanship.
Produced in Freeport, Illinois, the 284 series was part of Arcade’s celebrated farm toy line, created under license from Fordson, the tractor brand of Henry Ford & Son. Each half of this tractor bears the authentic “ARCADE 284L” and “284R” mold markings beneath — a hallmark of genuine Arcade production. Early versions like this one, with cast-iron wheels instead of later rubber tires, are especially sought after by collectors for their heft, charm, and true-to-life industrial design.
Condition:
In good condition, showing honest age-appropriate wear from play and time. The paint appears original, with expected chipping, minor oxidation, and scattered surface loss, giving it the authentic patina collectors prize. Structurally sound throughout, with smooth-rolling wheels and clear “ARCADE” cast markings.
Dimensions:
Height: 3.5"
Width: 3"
Length: 6"
Weight: 1 lb 4 oz
Collector’s Note:
Arcade Manufacturing Co. was one of the pioneers of American cast-iron toys, operating from the early 1900s until the mid-1940s. Their farm series — featuring Fordson tractors, threshers, and wagons — remains among the most beloved lines ever produced.
