1974 Mie-Shu Ou Watercolor "Apples in Corrales"

Watercolor and calligraphy on handmade paper affixed to mat board, by Mie-Shu Ou, a New Mexico artist born in China. The lettering reads “Apples in Corralis, Ou Mie Shu 1974” in the upper left corner. Handwritten on the back of work: 1974 OMS (W,C) 8W.

About the Artist: Mie-Shu Ou was a master of Chinese calligraphy and watercolor, born in Shanghai, China in 1928. He received his bachelor of law degree from Taiwan University before coming to the United States, and receiving a master of fine arts degree from Notre Dame University. He taught at Notre Dame, and he was also artist-in-residence at Nazareth College in Rochester NY, an assistant professor of Oriental art history at Hobart College in Geneva NY, and an instructor in Oriental brush painting at Rochester University. Starting in 1967, Mie-Shu taught watercolor, oil painting and drawing at the University of Albuquerque, and Oriental brush painting in the Community College at the University of New Mexico. His work has been exhibited in over 30 one-man shows, and in galleries and museums in multiple countries, and is in many private collections. His watercolor paintings are known for often including his favorite phrases from philosophy. Archives in the Santa Fe O’Keefe Museum include his exchanges with Georgia O’Keefe. He died at his home in Albuquerque in 1999.
