Pair of Antique Wooden Indian Clubs
Two matching antique wooden juggling or exercise pins, commonly referred to as Indian clubs. These exercise devices were very popular from the mid-19th century to the first few decades of the 20th century. This pair may date to the 1800s and they appear to have been lathe-turned. They're lightweight, with a warm stained wood finish with a central deep burgundy band of paint edged on both sides with gold. The painted bands have a wonderful aged crackle patina. This elegant pair of clubs can still be used for exercise, and they display beautifully on a mantel or shelf. Indian clubs or juggling pins ranged widely in weight and the degree of decoration. They were used to develop mobility and strength in choreographed routines, both for military and general public use. The practice of swinging clubs is believed to have developed originally in Persia and India. Because 19th-century British colonists first discovered exercising clubs in India, they became widely known as Indian clubs.
