About the Artist:
Russell Mott, a Las Cruces artist, embarked on his journey into ceramics later in life, following a career as a commercial photographer. Inspired to explore pottery just two months after 9/11, Mott quickly became a dedicated and skilled potter. His apprenticeship with esteemed potters such as Claude Smith III, Steve Hemingway, Dave Porter, and Alex Williams significantly influenced his technique and artistic vision. Known for his rigorous work ethic, Mott would start his day at 3 to 4 AM and spend up to 14 hours in the studio, finding joy in every stage of the pottery process.
While Mott experimented with various ceramic techniques, his primary focus was on traditional raku, a method that fascinated and challenged him. His raku pieces, celebrated for their intricate patterns and vibrant colors, reflect his deep connection to this ancient technique. Though he has since retired from active pottery making, his legacy endures through the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic integrity of his work. Mott's story is a testament to the idea that it is never too late to pursue one's passion, and his contributions continue to inspire both artists and collectors in the Las Cruces art community and beyond.
