Description: This striking jaguar sculpture is carved from a single piece of aspen wood and hand-painted by Harry Benally, a self-taught Navajo artist known for his fine woodcarvings and silversmith jewelry. Born in 1951 in Shiprock, NM, on the Navajo reservation, Benally is from the Salt Clan (Ashiihi) on his mother’s side and born for Kinyaa’aanii (Towering House People) on his father’s side. He currently resides in Sheep Springs, NM, with his wife Isabell. Influenced by his mother, a renowned rug weaver, Benally developed a keen sense of design and attention to detail, essential traits for his high-quality woodcarvings and jewelry. He primarily uses juniper, cottonwood roots, and aspen for his carvings.
