Miniature Georgian-Style Bureau
A fine miniature Georgian-style bureau, early 19th century, with later 19th or early 20th-century restoration, crafted from solid wood and elevated on a raised base with elegantly tapered legs and spade feet.
The bureau’s slant front showcases a beautifully grained surface with decorative inlays and inlaid stringing, folding down to form a sturdy writing surface lined with green felt. Inlaid stringing, a decorative technique where thin strips of contrasting wood or other materials are inlaid into the surface to create a refined linear pattern, adds an elegant touch to the overall design. The piece is fitted with flathead screws, indicative of period construction techniques. The interior woodwork includes detailed scalloped edges on the shelves and three small dovetail drawers, enhancing its historical charm. The exterior features six larger dovetail drawers, all with celluloid handles, likely added during a later restoration. The bureau is raised on a base with elegantly tapered legs and spade feet, adding to its presence.
The slant-front desk opens to reveal:
- A felt-lined writing surface, supported by a pull-out support mechanism
- An interior arrangement of shelves with scalloped edges (3" and 1.5" height) and three dovetail drawers
The exterior features:
- Six dovetail drawers, each fitted with celluloid handles
Condition: In fair condition, with signs of use and age-appropriate wear. The restoration is aged, and the piece would benefit from a refresh on the restoration. There are scuffs and scratches throughout, along with chipped and cracked veneer. Some sections of veneer are absent. The piece is missing its key.
