Alebrijes originated in Mexico City in the 1930s by artist Pedro Linares. According to legend, Linares fell ill and dreamt of a strange place resembling a forest. There, he saw trees, animals, rocks, clouds, and other things that suddenly transformed into strange, fantastical creatures. When he recovered, he began recreating the creatures he saw in his dreams out of papier-mâché.
Today, alebrijes are made primarily in the state of Oaxaca by artisans who use copal wood, a type of tree that grows in the region. These pieces are meticulously hand carved and painted, often taking weeks to complete.
