About the Artists: Dorothy and Richard Rising of Rising Sky Artworks
Dorothy and Richard Rising have been renowned clay artists for decades, establishing their studio in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in 1986. Initially from New York, they found inspiration in Las Cruces—a charming town rapidly growing into a vibrant city. They named their gallery Rising Sky Artworks, a nod to their family tradition and the mesmerizing sky vistas framed by the Organ Mountains and the Chihuahuan Desert. The Land of Enchantment indeed influences their work, from the glaze colors to the compositions inspired by their travels through the Southwest's deserts. At their studio, they specialized in high-fire stoneware, using white porcelain clay and a gas oxidation kiln. While Richard focused on wheel-thrown pieces, Dorothy excelled in hand-building techniques. Although Rising Sky Artworks ceased production in 2016, their legacy endures in each piece, capturing the spirit and beauty of New Mexico.
