Armenian Alphabet Kilim Wall Hanging
A handwoven kilim showcasing the full complement of the Armenian alphabet's 39 characters. Each letter, intricately woven into the fabric of this piece, represents the script's evolution from its 5th-century origins through subsequent refinements up to the 14th century.
Crafted from high-quality wool, this kilim was procured from the venerable grounds of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the ecclesiastical capital of Armenia, located in the historic city of Vagharshapat. This sacred site is the seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church and was the backdrop for the item's acquisition in 2005, which marked the quintennial celebration of the enthronement of the Church's current Catholicos, a term denoting the head bishop and spiritual leader.
The historical value is further enhanced by the item's connection to the doctrinal divergence from the Roman Catholic Church, which is notably represented in the distinct practice of crossing oneself with two fingers in the Armenian Church. This kilim is a tangible testament to such a significant spiritual legacy.
